It all started out with only fifteen children that trained twice a week at our very own Victoria Park Leisure Centre. Sue stayed with the club for fifteen years and left in 1987, leaving her long lasting legacy behind with the emphasis upon swimmers enjoying their sport and being competitive.

Start: 6:00pm
IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR ALL MEMBERS!
Can all swimmers (parents/guardians) please make every effort to make sure your child(ren)/swimmer(s) are on time to their teaching/coaching sessions!
If you’re thinking why?? Have a read below!
The warm up is the most important part of the session and can help in reducing injuries. During the warm up the body pumps blood around the body sending oxygen to your muscles and other parts of the body – without this happening your body would begin to fatigue and get very tired.
If your body is not fully warmed up for a main session we usually end up with swimmers complaining of strains, pulls and tears to muscles, ligaments, tendons and tissues. This can result in severe pain and will most likely lead to several weeks or months out of the pool and constant visits to the doctors or physiotherapists.
Swimmers should aim to arrive 5 minutes earlier than the normal pool session time to begin their blood flow and light stretches. After the pool session they should then complete a 10 minutes stretching programme on poolside to ensure their muscles are fully stretched and flexible. If you have ever experienced pain or aching in your joints or muscles after a training session and have not stretched afterwards this is the most likely cause of this discomfort.
Please make sure you are continuing to stretch at home, use the stretching sheet you have been given and also the stretches you have learnt at training.
Sponsored Swim - Middleton's
Well done to all that swam in the Sponsored Swim for the Middleton’s. There was some very good swimming and a lot of lengths being racked up within the 15 minute swim time limit. Please make sure you hand in your forms and monies in as soon as possible to Rob.
More to follow soon…
Ben at Midlands
On Sunday 3rd June 2012, Ilkeston Swimming Club’s Ben Saunders went to race at the Age Group Midland Championships in Coventry Sports Centres 50m International Pool. Earlier this year at the County Championships in March, Ben qualified for the Midlands in his 100m Butterfly event posting a time of 1:06:10 where he won gold and was named the County Champion in his age group.
Ben was the first Ilkeston Swimmer to qualify for the Midlands this year and unfortunately would have qualified for two more events in the 200m Individual Medley and 100m Freestyle however; he just missed out gaining these times a few days later after the cut off date.
On the day of Age Group Midlands Ben posted a time of 1:07:00 just missing out on his personal best time, nevertheless still swimming fast, he gave a good solid performance for his first ever Midlands against some very tough competition from the Midland region! Fantastic effort – Well done Ben! Everyone at Ilkeston Swimming Club is very proud of your achievement! Congratulations!

Matlock Friendly Gala 2012 - 3rd Spot for ISC
Last weekend Ilkeston Swimming Club swam at the Matlock and District Swimming Club A Grade Friendly Gala. Ilkeston took their squad to the brand new eight lane competition pool in Derbyshire. Some of the swimmers had already swam in this pool at Counties so it was great to come back and use these fantastic facilities once again!
There were several debut swims for the squad and they didn't dissapoint! Massive congratulations go to the following swimmers on their first competitive starts with Ilkeston Swimming Club:
Sophie Jackson,
Ellie Chadburn-Tennyson
Abigail Butterworth
Julie Woods
Kirsten Buchanan
Mick Howard
Some great performances from the whole squad!!
The squad were given different races from what they would usually have swam in at a club gala but, swimmers were happy to swim them once the pre-race nerves had settled and the gala began! Saying that some swimmers hadn't swam that race in a while there were plenty of personal bests coming from them so well done!
The team spirit and ethos was outstanding as usual with swimmers/coaches and parentsmaking lots of noise and shouting the Ilkeston swimmers on! Keep it up!!
As for personal best times, there were hats full again! So, well done all!!
Big thank you to everyone on poolside, a great team effort saw Ilkeston take 3rd place from some super swimming! Well done!!!!

Ilkeston Swimmers on Rampage at Rykneld...
A great weekend of Swimming gave Ilkeston Swimmers a lot to smile about as they pulled out all of the stops against their competition at the Rykneld Open Meet. Swimmers went on rampage giving dominating performances securing their event by at least a length in most cases.
Overall the team racked up a massive total of 42 personal best times! To add to the great success of smashing their personal bests there were also lots of medals and trophies that were won on the day! The morning session saw the team win 26 medals/trophies in what was a very pleasing start to the open meet but, it didnt end there! After the lunch break, the afternoon session begun and it didnt dissapoint! The swimmers didnt take their foot off the gas and gave more outstanding performances to collect another 27 medals/trophies between the team!
So, overall the medals table ended with Ilkeston gaining 53 in total! Surely, the best team there!
Ilkeston's coaches were very impressed with the results and said, "Swimmers were showing positive attitudes on the block and in the pool, giving some great performances and putting what they had learnt in training into action against their competitors". Paula added, "Brilliant performances, team spirit and a great time had by all! Well done everyone!" Mick also said, "Great swimming from the Ilkeston Swimmers; a huge haul of trophies, medals and masses of pb's!"
Congratulations to these Swimmers:
Megan Lyhnam, Kyle Hudson, Ben Saunders, Chelsea Sanders, Cameron Halliday, Sophie Lyhnam, Abigail Sloan, Emily Middleton, Jo Saunders, Mitchell Sanders, Shannen Sidoli, Mary Traynor, Nathan Beecroft, Tom Moloney, Sophie King, Charlotte Butterworth, Christel Draycott

City of Stoke Open 2012
It was a very challenging weekend; physically and mentally demanding on the body during an open meet with long intervals between races in hot and humid conditions on poolside. However, swimmers swam with positive attitudes giving it there best with many of the swimmers just missing out on current times/personal bests - especially under the circumstances with many saying it was a "slow" pool however, they managed to record some respectable times.
Ben was swimming on both days bringing back three gold and two silver medals from a total of 8 races in his age group. Kyle was swimming three races on the Sunday and secured top ten finishes in all his races he entered for in his age group. Also, Rob was swimming on the Sunday too in four races and gained top ten positions too.

Looking good at Leicester...
Ilkeston Swimming Club made the journey to Leicester over the weekend to swim in the final round of the Leicester Winter League at Enderby Leisure Centre. But, this time with no snow - weather conditions looked ok with a sunny, humid and breezy evening. Ilkeston started the night in 12th position in the league table. On paper it looked like it was going to be a very interesting competition and it did not dissapoint with Ilkeston Swimmers showing the opposing teams what were all about!
The points were very tight between the teams through-out the gala but Ilkeston stepped up to the mark and swam some super swims helping them push further gaining more points to add to the total. Overall Ilkeston accumulated a total of 6 first places, 10 second places and 6 third places.
The final result on the night saw Ilkeston finish in a very respectable 5th position with a very small squad of swimmers. Well done to everyone that swam in the first, second and the third and final round of the Leicester League Competition.

County Champs - The Super Six
County Champs 2012 - The Super Six
Two fantastic weekends of swimming saw Ilkeston Swimmers achieve outstanding results from all the hard work they have put in at training for weeks and months on end and it all came down to these two weekends of racing at the Derbyshire ASA County Championships.
The first weekend of racing set off to a flying start at the new 8 laned swimming pool Matlock ARC Leisure Centre. The results were looking very promising with good times being swam; several personal best times being recorded by the team, along with several top six finishes and medals. After two great days of swimming everyone was shattered but very pleased with their results they had swam. All the swimmers went home knowing that they had a very successful weekend in the pool.
The second weekend begun like we finished at Matlock swimming hard and fast pushing ourselves to our limits and proving that anything is possible if you train hard, believe in yourself and believe in your coach! Swimmer's already had previous experience of swimming in Chesterfield's Queens Leisure Centre pool so nothing phased them as they went from strength to strength to finish the County Championships on a high.
Ilkeston Swimmers looked composed, professional, had positive attitudes and above all showed their team spirit, dedication and commitment with lots of praise for each other. Overall, Ilkeston accumulated at total of 27 personal best times out of 35 races, 18 top six county finishes and 9 medals in total. A very successful turn-around with only six swimmers taking part.
A big thank you to Mick Howard, Ilkeston's Head Coach and the Parents of Ilkeston Swimming Club from all the swimmers for all their encouragement, support, inspiration, motivational talks and backing! Two very fun and successful weekends of swimming with some exceptional results and performances from the swimmers!
Well done to these Swimmers:
Charlie Palmer
Kyle Hudson
Ben Saunders
Grace Vivian
Cameron Halliday
Robert Hudson
A full news report of the event will be available soon! Once again congratulations to all involved!
