Our History... Ilkeston Swimming Club was first formed and established by Mrs Sue Hawley in the year of 1972. It all started out with only fifteen children that trained twice a week at our very own Victoria Park Leisure Centre. Sue stayed with the club for fifteen years and left in 1987, leaving her long lasting legacy behind with the emphasis upon swimmers enjoying their sport and being competitive.

IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR ALL MEMBERS!
Can all swimmers (parents/guardians) please make every effort to make sure your child(ren)/swimmer(s) are on time to their teaching/coaching sessions!
If you’re thinking why?? Have a read below!
The warm up is the most important part of the session and can help in reducing injuries. During the warm up the body pumps blood around the body sending oxygen to your muscles and other parts of the body – without this happening your body would begin to fatigue and get very tired.
If your body is not fully warmed up for a main session we usually end up with swimmers complaining of strains, pulls and tears to muscles, ligaments, tendons and tissues. This can result in severe pain and will most likely lead to several weeks or months out of the pool and constant visits to the doctors or physiotherapists.
Swimmers should aim to arrive 5 minutes earlier than the normal pool session time to begin their blood flow and light stretches. After the pool session they should then complete a 10 minutes stretching programme on poolside to ensure their muscles are fully stretched and flexible. If you have ever experienced pain or aching in your joints or muscles after a training session and have not stretched afterwards this is the most likely cause of this discomfort.
Please make sure you are continuing to stretch at home, use the stretching sheet you have been given and also the stretches you have learnt at training.
Sponsored Swim - Middleton's
Well done to all that swam in the Sponsored Swim for the Middleton’s. There was some very good swimming and a lot of lengths being racked up within the 15 minute swim time limit. Please make sure you hand in your forms and monies in as soon as possible to Rob.
More to follow soon…
Ben at Midlands
On Sunday 3rd June 2012, Ilkeston Swimming Club’s Ben Saunders went to race at the Age Group Midland Championships in Coventry Sports Centres 50m International Pool. Earlier this year at the County Championships in March, Ben qualified for the Midlands in his 100m Butterfly event posting a time of 1:06:10 where he won gold and was named the County Champion in his age group.
Ben was the first Ilkeston Swimmer to qualify for the Midlands this year and unfortunately would have qualified for two more events in the 200m Individual Medley and 100m Freestyle however; he just missed out gaining these times a few days later after the cut off date.
On the day of Age Group Midlands Ben posted a time of 1:07:00 just missing out on his personal best time, nevertheless still swimming fast, he gave a good solid performance for his first ever Midlands against some very tough competition from the Midland region! Fantastic effort – Well done Ben! Everyone at Ilkeston Swimming Club is very proud of your achievement! Congratulations!
